Crafting an impactful newsletter holds immense potential to establish trust and authority with your audience, particularly as a marketer or business owner.
Let's maybe cover first why starting an email newsletter is a great idea to begin with.
- Cost-effective: Unlike other creative platforms, starting an email newsletter is usually free, requiring no financial investment upfront.
- Low friction: Writing and sending an email newsletter is relatively easy and doesn't require technical expertise. It's as simple as typing and hitting the send button.
- Privacy and control: With an email newsletter, you have a private and direct line of communication with your audience. You own the subscriber list and can engage with them personally, fostering a deeper connection.
- Audience ownership: A big important factor for me! Unlike other platforms where you rely on algorithms and external entities, an email newsletter allows you to cultivate and own your audience. You can establish a direct relationship, communicate regularly, and build trust.
- Relationship building: Email newsletters enable two-way communication, allowing for meaningful interactions with your subscribers. It can lead to forming connections, receiving feedback, and even making new friends or professional contacts.
- Long-term asset: Over time, your email newsletter becomes an asset that holds value. It can serve as a platform to showcase your expertise, share valuable content, and promote your offerings.
Starting an email newsletter can be a rewarding journey, offering a unique way to connect with your audience, share insights, and potentially increase your revenue.
However, the task may seem overwhelmingly challenging at times. I have dedicated the past 30 months developing a proven formula that enables me to write my weekly newsletters in 30 minutes or less.
I have condensed the most important learnings to effectively write a newsletter into five essentials. Let's go!
Lesson #1 – Establish a Repository of Inspiration
Capture your topic ideas in one place as they come to you, ensuring you never start from scratch. Spend a few minutes daily exploring different sources for inspiration, such as LinkedIn, YouTube channels, other newsletters, news stories, or Reddit.
Use Notion to gather new ideas each day, providing you with a wealth of inspiration for subsequent newsletters.
Lesson #2 – Uncover Valuable Insights
Once you have a topic from your idea bank, perform research using Google or other resources. Look for books, tweets, quotes, or articles that support your topic or offer interesting perspectives. These research snippets will strengthen your thoughts and provide diverse viewpoints for your readers.
And yes, you can even use ChatGPT to generate some ideas but give it your personal touch. It's quite easy to detect GPT generated content – you cannot fool your audience.
Lesson #3 – Streamline Your Newsletter Structure
Simplify the process by using a newsletter template as a roadmap. Consider a structure that addresses a significant problem, educates your audience, talk about common solutions, limitations of existing methods, alternative approaches, and recommended actionable steps for your audience.
This consistent formula ensures you address your audience's challenges and cultivate a loyal following.
Lesson #4 – Plan Your Key Points
Before writing, create headers that outline the key points of your newsletter. These serve as guideposts, keeping you focused and preventing tangents. Establishing a clear outline helps maintain a smooth writing process and ensures you communicate your critical ideas effectively.
Lesson #5 – Deliver Value and Actionable Advice
Flesh out your newsletter using a structured approach. Begin each section with an opening line that sets the intent of the header, followed by insights and actionable steps for readers. This framework guarantees you provide value and practical tactics your audience can apply.
By following these five tips, you can create a compelling and impactful newsletter while efficiently building trust and authority with your target audience as a business owner or company.
Of course there's way more to creating a newsletter, setting up automations inside of ConvertKit or HubSpot or...
- Design and Branding: Crafting an aesthetically pleasing and cohesive newsletter design that aligns with your brand can be challenging. From selecting the right color scheme and fonts to creating visually appealing layouts, ensuring your newsletter reflects your brand's identity requires expertise in design.
- Content Strategy: Developing a compelling content strategy is crucial for a successful newsletter. Identifying your target audience, understanding their needs and interests, and consistently delivering valuable and engaging content requires careful planning and research.
- Subscriber Acquisition: Building a subscriber base for your newsletter can be a daunting task. It involves implementing effective lead generation strategies, optimizing website forms, leveraging social media, and employing other techniques to attract and convert visitors into subscribers.
- Email Deliverability: Ensuring that your newsletters reach your subscribers' inboxes and avoid being flagged as spam is a technical challenge. Managing email deliverability involves maintaining a healthy sender reputation, implementing proper authentication protocols, and adhering to email best practices.
- Analytics and Optimization: Tracking and analyzing the performance of your newsletters is essential for refining your strategy and maximizing engagement. Understanding metrics such as open rates, click-through rates, and conversions requires expertise in data analysis and the ability to derive actionable insights.
